On 1 April – in just five weeks’ time – the county council and seven district and borough councils in North Yorkshire will become one – North Yorkshire Council.

All eight councils have been working together to establish how best services can be provided, while ensuring business continues as usual.

This means you will see minimal change as we bring services and staff together in the background. For example, your bins will be collected, you will be able to access your local library, take part in activities at your local leisure centre, and contact your local planning department for advice.

Access to support and services will be easier, with one telephone number and one website. The new council will retain a main office in each former district area, supported by around 30 additional local customer access points in the places people go.

One set of councillors will be accountable for all services, so it will be clear to see who represents your local area and who to contact.

Replacing eight councils with one also gives us the best possible chance of protecting our valued services at a time of exceptional financial pressures and high demand.

By joining up services and maximising our spending power, the new council will save between £30 million and £70 million in the first few years which will then become annual savings. This money can be used to protect some of our most important local services.

North Yorkshire Council is being built with local at its heart and aims to be the most local, large council in England.

Staff will continue to live and work in the communities they serve, listening to the needs of individual places and supporting local priorities and action.

We will work closely with town and parish councils, wider partners and communities to ensure that local priorities drive locally led decision-making and local action.

PBS Construction LTD, on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council, will be undertaking carriageway resurfacing works on Cravengate. This is to provide you with an update and clarification of these upcoming works.

The works are currently programmed to commence on Monday 27th February and will be carried out under a full road closure to through traffic for a period of 15 weekdays. However, vehicle access will be maintained to properties and business within the closure.

The works will involve:

• Resurfacing of the existing carriageway – 28th Feb to 15th March

This will occur between the southern end of Cravengate, next to the Old Cello Workshop to just before Victoria roundabout opposite Temple Square.

• Renewal of existing traffic calming measures – 16th March to 17th March

Except the speed cushions outside No 1 Cravengate, which will be relocated slightly to the south to improve access to property.

• Installation of upstand kerbs at the entrance to Temple View – 09th March to 10th March

This measure will be introduced to reduce water ponding issues by redirecting surface water into the existing gullies.

• Carriageway drainage works – 06th March to 09th March

The levels of existing highway gullies will be adjusted to suit finished road levels. A new gully will be installed adjacent to the kerb line near Cravengate Nursery to improve carriageway drainage.

• Clearing of overgrown vegetation along the length of Cravengate, where required. – 01st March to 03rd March

A plan showing the extent of the works is enclosed for your information.

Advance warning signage advising of the works will be installed on site shortly. Whilst the works are in progress, a fully signed diversion will be in place. During the works traffic will be diverted via Rosemary Lane onto Bargate and egress will be via the Market Place. The diversion plan drawing is enclosed for your information.

On-site personnel will assist in managing access to properties and businesses within the closure. Please be advised there may be extended periods when access will not be possible due to the nature of the works and physical constraints of the site. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Please note, this work is part of an extensive programme and therefore, some adjustment to this start date or the duration of the works may be necessary should unforeseen circumstances such as significant weather events or emergencies on the highway network arise.

• Please co-operate and comply with any instructions issued by the traffic management operatives and take extra care whilst within the works area.

North Yorkshire County Council

The new North Yorkshire Council will launch on 1 April.

We will merge with the existing seven district and borough authorities to provide one single authority to cover the whole of England’s largest county.

Nearly 33,000 businesses and 615,000 residents in North Yorkshire are due to be given easier access to services ranging from education and highways to waste collection and disposal, planning and economic development through the new council.

Council leader, Cllr Carl Les, said that the new authority would have the interests of communities at its heart, and would aim to be the most local council nationally despite serving such a vast geographical area.

Cllr Les, who will assume the leadership of North Yorkshire Council from April 1, said: “The launch of the new council presents a defining moment for North Yorkshire and the way we can deliver services to the public.

“The chance to operate as one single authority will allow us to make significant savings and protect some of the most important local services at a critical time when everyone and every organisation is feeling the pressure from increased costs.

“There will be tough financial decisions ahead, but by making this change now, we are in a much stronger position to manage the rising costs and increased demand for services.”

The Christmas Eve Festival on 24th December 2022 at 6pm – 7pm at St James Church, Melsonby.

There will be a festive celebration of Christmas music in the church on Christmas Eve, at 6pm, compered by Martin Vickerman.

You can join in singing with the Melsonby children and there will be contributions from the Priestley family and the Melsonby Choir.

All are welcome, but as it will be popular, you will need to get there early to get a seat!

Its an information booklet which provides a summary of activities and support for older people and people living with dementia. It’s called The Blue Book and is free to anyone

As a bit of background, The Blue Book is a family project – a voluntary initiative which came about through personal experience. It is updated each year and circulated as digital and hard copies. To date, we’ve distributed over 30,000 copies! More information is below my signature or on our website.
