The Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) record all traffic movements into our village. There are three signs located at Moor Road, East Road and Ladywell. On a monthly basis, the data from these signs is downloaded and a detailed summary produced. This shows the number of vehicles coming into the village passed these 3 signs, the number per day on average, the number of vehicles speeding and that number as a % of the total.
As a result of the presentation of this data to NY Highways over the past few months, they agreed to fit 7 new double sided 30 mph repeater signs in the village. These were fitted in early November 25.
Three of these are on Ladywell Bank Road on the road to Aldbrough St John between the crossroads and the VAS. One is on West Road and one on East Road. Two are on Moor Road. Hopefully you have seen them?
Sadly, the data download for November (see below) shows the highest % of speeders since these current set of figures were produced starting in July 2024 at 16.96%. The number of vehicles coming into the village was down by 5152 on October but the climb in the speeder % over the last few months is troubling.

In January 2026, the Speedwatch team intend to turn all 3 Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) to point in the opposite direction. This will provide data about the speeds of vehicles driving out of the village. Watch this space for updates.
If you have any questions on this data, please contact Andrew Wilson on Wilsonlymm1961@btinternet.com or the Parish Council Clerk at melsonbyp8@gmail.com.
Melsonby Community Speed Watch team
The Melsonby Community Speed Watch team have now finished for the winter. Over the past 6 months our fantastic volunteers have been out and about around the village at different times of the day and at different locations. Using Police issued speed recording equipment any vehicle observed to be driving in excess of the speed limit has been formally reported to North Yorkshire Police. Ultimately they will decide what course of action to take in each case. Hopefully this team activity has lead to a reduction in traffic speeding through the village, making our village safer.
If you are interested in volunteering from April 2026, please contact Andrew Wilson, the speed watch coordinator at Wilsonlymm1961@btinternet.com. Details of the speed watch sessions are outlined below.
